C’est en 1933 que Gaspard Matonnat fonda les chantiers Matonnat en 1933 à Nevers.
A partir de 1939, le chantier se nommera G.Matonnat et fils.
Pierre Matonnat créé le chantier P. Matonnat au 45 Boulevard de la Plage à Arcachon et ouvre un de leurs bureaux aux alentours de Joinville le Pont vers l’année 1945, à l’emplacement des anciens chantiers De Saever (71 quai de la Marne).
Le chantier construisait des dinghies, des vedettes et plus tard se spécialise dans la construction de vedettes de haute mer-pêche et croisières vendues à l’unité. Les vedettes ’motor yacht 48’ d’une longueur de 14,80 m, homologuées en deuxième catégories, très robustes, en acajou, conçues pour la croisière hauturière ils remportèrent un gros succès auprès de la clientèle.
Mais en 1963, la grande révolution du polyester remplace la construction classique, en bois et porte un rude coup aux bateaux classiques, sur le marché de la navigation de plaisance.
Le 12 mars 1979, sous la direction d’une nouvelle équipe, les chantiers navals Pierre Matonnat, restructurés et développés prennent le nom de "S.E.C.M. Matonnat" (société d’exploitation des chantiers Matonnat).
